Heavyweight blue-chip prospect Francis “The Predator” Ngannou met veteran Andrei Arlovski in a potentially concussion-inducing match up at UFC on FOX 23 tonight (Sat., Jan. 28, 2017) inside Pepsi Center in Denver, Colorado.
Ngannou opened by countering a kick with a huge overhand that glanced off Arlovski’s temple. Ngannou was patient as Arlovski darted in with a combination, catching Ngannou with the last punch in the flurry. Arlovski darted in again, but Ngannou leaned just beyond the reach of his swinging right hand. As he did so, Ngannou landed a left hook over the top and then shifted his hips back into a right uppercut that landed square. Arlovski dropped to all fours as if he had been poleaxed. “The Predator” stood over the immobile former champion and began raining down hard shots until the referee got between them.
In the post-fight interview, Ngannou said he is very happy to beat a Top 10-ranked fighter, and sees it as part of his continuing improvement. He said the finish was all reflex, and ringside announcer Brian Stann — pointing out the size of his mitts — called him the scariest fighter in the Heavyweight division. This is a great win for the young prospect, and he will surely find himself on the fast track to a title shot if he keeps it up.
Official result: Francis Ngannou def. Andrei Arlovski via technical knockout at 1:32 of round one
