Things just keep getting crazier with Conor McGregor.
Outside of being pulled from UFC 200, the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) megastar has now been loosely linked to a boxing match this summer with retired great Floyd Mayweather Jr. The erroneous report even sparked oddsmakers to create a betting line.
The fact that these two combat stars have a history doesn’t necessarily make this news easier to dismiss.
But in a recent interview with the Kevin Iole of Yahoo! Sports, UFC president Dana White officially put the audacious rumors to rest.
“It’s not true; it’s just a tabloid story,” said White. “And as far as I knew, Floyd is retired and he’s been on a world-wide vacation and hasn’t even been thinking of fighting.”
While mixed martial arts (MMA) legend Anderson Silva has flirted with fighting boxing legend Roy Jones Jr. and Heavyweight boxer Tyson Fury has previously mentioned fighting Cain Velasquez, McGregor is unlikely to leave the sport that has made him an international superstar anytime soon.
After all, he has unfinished business with Lightweight-turned-Welterweight Nate Diaz and the entire 145-pound division. Mayweather will have to find another big payday somewhere else.
