Tarec Saffiedine’s unfortunate luck may be continuing.
According to sources, the UFC is looking for a potential replacement for Saffiedine because he suffered an injury towards the end of the training camp for his May 29 fight against Rick Story. Saffiedine hasn’t been officially ruled out of the fight just yet, however, the promotion is doing its due diligence since the fight is seven days away.
Saffiedine, according to sources, is expected to see a doctor Sunday or Monday to get the final word on whether he’ll be able to fight or not.
The Belgian fighter was successful in his first fight in almost 16 months back in January when he defeated Jake Ellenberger via unanimous decision. Since becoming the final Strikeforce welterweight champion in Jan. 2013, Saffiedine (16-4) has only fought three times due to various injuries.
Meanwhile, Story (18-8) hasn’t fought since his Oct. 2014 win over Gunnar Nelson because he recently recovered from neck surgery.
UFC Fight Night 88, headlined by Thomas Almeida vs. Cody Garbrandt, will take place next Sunday at the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas. The Saffiedine-Story tilt was scheduled for the main card.
