Boxing will have a major event Saturday night, with a championship rematch between Canelo Alvarez and Gennady Golovkin. The bout is drawing interest not just from fans of the sweet science, but from the combat sports world in general. Several MMA and UFC fighters spoke to Bloody Elbow about the match up, and gave their predictions on the highly anticipated bout.
Colby Covington: Canelo. He’s on that tainted Mexican meat.
Ricky Simon: Canelo, I just think from the first fight he showed who the better tactician was and should be able to adapt better this go around.
Cody Stamann: I think the second fight goes exactly like the first one. GGG beats his ass and Canelo gets a decision on the cards.
Kajan Johnson: I suck at boxing predictions lol but I’d go GGG.
Kurt Holobaugh: So I think GGG Is going to edge out a split decision. I think Canelo is going to win the early rounds but he’s going to start putting this back on the ropes and GGG is going to take advantage, kinda like he did last fight. I’m going with GGG split decision.
Max Griffin: GGG Baby. He’s gonna put the pressure on Canelo.
Mike Rhodes: I believe GGG won the first fight by at least 3-4 rounds! I believe GGG will come out less hesitant this time, and will find his range and let his punches go earlier and not give up the first 3 rounds to do so! I think GGG will hurt him in the middle rounds but will ultimately win a decision.
Nick Newell: It’s so hard to bet against GGG. His experience, consistency and ring generalship are the best in the business. With that said, Canelo is very hungry and wants to cement his place as one of the all time greats. Did he learn lessons from the first fight and make the adjustments needed to pull off the win? Nah….GGG by decision.
Tim Means: I am predicting GGG
Heath Herring: I’d lean towards GGG experience and saltiness.
Ben Saunders: If I was a betting man, I would bet on GGG, but Canelo being his only DRAW on his record, and the fact they both know eachother more now than before. A victor cpuld very well be for the man who has been able to learn and adapt the most from their first encounter. I am a big fan of both, and am looking forward to an awesome boxing match, where I feel most people will enjoy.
Julian Marquez: Canelo is more technical but he’s smaller than Triple G, which will cause him problems. If Canelo doesnt gas out like the first fight, he will cruise to victory but my guess is that Triple G will walk him down once he gets tired
Santiago Ponzinibbio: It really is a fight of the highest level, I really like the style of the two, I think they are the best of today. I think GGG is going to win it. I see it more technical with better distance control.
Jared Gordon: I got GGG.
Nik Lentz: GGG.
Mike Rodriguez: I’m going with my man Canelo. I think Canelo’s gonna do it this time. Let’s go.
Beneil Dariush: I think Triple G is going to overwhelm Canelo with his jab, and finish him in the later rounds.
Matt Bessette: First off, I think that GGG won the first fight hands down. I believe that he was screwed out of a decision. That being said, in that first fight, Canelo was successful from the outside, landing clean punches, and I think that’s where he tries to stay for this fight. This time around, I think he finds more success in combination as GGG is coming in. His experience from the first fight is going to be apparent. Regardless, I know it’s going to be a great fight and that’s all I care about!
Shane Burgos: Huge fan of both of these fighters. First fight was an instant classic. I personally had GGG winning the first one but regardless of the outcome it was an amazing fight. The way Canelo was able to rally and come back in those last 3 rounds was something I think he’ll be able to carry over into this next fight. I think he’s more aware of GGG’s pressure since he’s felt it now and will make the adjustments earlier in the fight, so I do see it going differently this time. I think Canelo’s volume and counter punching will earn him the nod on the scorecards this time around in.
Dennis Bermudez: I think GGG is tougher. Both highly skilled. Canelo the stronger boxer. But this fight is going to go the distance, & the tougher competitor (GGG) wins.
Christos Giagos: GGG, knockout, 5th round. I believe GGG has him figured out from last fight and won’t leave it to the judges to screw it up again.
Jose Torres: I say GGG 3rd round KO.
Daniel Kelly: I think GGG all the way by stoppage.
Eryk Anders: Im going with GGG.
Alex Perez: I got GGG decision.
Karl Roberson: I like Canelo I feel hes a smarter fighter and will make the necessary adjustments to take the fight.
Luis Pena: GGG by unanimous decision.
Rob Font: Going with GGG.
Matt Brown: GGG by KO.
Zak Cummings: GGG by decision. Think he will start strong and finish strong, but see Canelo taking some middle rounds.
Siyar Bahadurzada: This fight is awesome I’m so many ways. I think GGG will take this fight. I like how he fights. Calm and a cold blooded killer.
Paul Craig: This last match up was a close one and this is a tough one to predict also. Canelo started most of the middle rounds well but then he always looked as though he was gassing finishing the rounds which then gave Golovkin an opening. Golovkin showed how solid a chin he had in that fight when taking some of Canelo’s best shots, but if I think if Canelo can be smart with his cardio then I think he could pick away at Golovkin using his superior speed and foot work. I’m going for Canelo by decision and I predict a 3rd fight following this one.
Gegard Mousasi: GGG gonna win because hè fights more agressieve and goes forward. That scores more than when guys fight backward and when the fight is going even.
Louis Smolka: I think GGG might get reckless this one. I feel like the storyline GGG supporters are writing, saying he got robbed and then with Camelo popping. A lot of the build up seems to be making it a foregone conclusion that he will win. If he believes the hype, he might feel like he’s the better fighter already and be somewhat careless and sloppy and end up costing him some early rounds in what will end up being the difference
Darren Stewart: GGG all the way.
Vicente Luque: I’m a big Canelo fan but I think GGG won the first fight and I think he will win the second one as well.
Drakkar Klose: Taking GGG. I thought he won the first fight. He’s definitely gonna win this one since Canelo ain’t juiced up.
Marion Reneau: GGG is my prediction. By way of decision. I feel he was robbed in the last fight. Golovkin will be sharp and stay busy. Canelo is great but I can’t stand those who try to cheat. So I’m going to stand with GGG!
Gerald Meerschaert: I think GGG establishes his jab earlier in this fight forcing Canelo to engage in exchanges giving GGG a convincing decision victory.
Adam Milstead: A boxing match with two very evenly matched boxers such as this will come down to inches. I see GGG coming out with the victory on unanimous decision on account of him staying more active than Canelo. Though I like Canelo’s style more, I feel the weight of his “tainted Mexican beef” scandal will weigh him down enough for GGG to pull of the win. Boxing is extremely mental.
Tim Johnson: Canelo. He was working GGG until he gassed. So if he has that sorted I’m giving him the nod.
Patrick Cummins: I got GGG. I think he might stop Canelo his time
Alex Volkanovski: ALVAREZ
Alex Hernandez: Gonna have to say Canelo by unanimous decision.
Mark Coleman: Triple G all the way
Rolando Dy: GGG. In my opinion GGG won the last fight. And Canelo tested positive, so how much more if he didn’t juice? He even proved that he can take Canelo’s power, so I’m picking GGG. If Canelo will not cheat this time, he will not last ‘til 12.
Ben Nguyen: I think Triple G is going to win. Just ‘cause he’s in there, he’s having fun and he’s just so relaxed. He’ll take a punch, but it doesn’t do anything because he’s not as stiff. He takes it and just goes with it, whereas Canelo takes a punch, he’s so stiff, it hurts him. I think it will go to a decision again.
