This is the UFC Sydney live blog for Fabricio Werdum vs. Marcin Tybura, a heavyweight bout at Saturday night’s UFC event at the Qudos Bank Arena in Sydney, Australia.

A former UFC heavyweight champion, Werdum looks to pick up his second win in two months against Polish up-and-comer Tybura in the main event.

Round 1: Here we go, folks. It’s been a long night, but we’re finally at our main event. No boomerangs tonight for Werdum. Referee Leon Roberts is the third man in the cage. They touch ‘em up and we’re off. Werdum storms out and takes the center of the cage. Early leg kicks from both fighters. Slow start to this one. Werdum lands a body kick. Werdum lunges inside and connects with a short shovel hook, then flurries. Tybura is struggling to find his rhythm thus far. Werdum paws out a few jabs then smacks Tybura with a hard right hand. Werdum changes levels for a single-leg attempt, fails, then swirls to Tybura’s back with both fighters against the fence. Werdum trips Tybura to the floor, but Tybura escapes and reverses. Round 2: Tybura eats an opening right hand from Werdum right away. Tybura goes low-high, mixing in a few kicks with a punch. Oh, Tybura lands a clean head kick on Werdum. Nice shot there but Werdum just ate it. Werdum sneaks a right hand through the guard of Tybura. Three-punch combination connects for Werdum. Another little shovel hook finds its mark for Werdum. That shot keeps working for him. Very measured round from both men. Werdum misses a wild spinning heel kick. Now business is picking up; Werdum starts marching Tybura down and picking him apart with combinations. MMA Fighting scores the round 10-9 Werdum. (20-18 Werdum.)

Round 3: Werdum with the quick one-two. Werdum catches a kick then answers with one of his own. Another big head kick lands for Werdum, but Tybura fires back. Tybura catches one of Werdum’s legs but fails in a trip attempt. Werdum keeps hunting for the Thai clinch but can’t get much going. Werdum is the clear aggressor here. Still, Tybura is eating plenty of shots but staying unfazed — and answering in spurts. Werdum unloads against the fence and Tybura may be hurt! Tybura covers up as Werdum looks for a big knee. Nothing going, and they release to the center of the cage. Rather than rush anything, Werdum is electing to stay extremely patient. MMA Fighting scores the round 10-9 Werdum. (30-27 Werdum.)

Round 4: Quick touch of gloves as they reach the championship rounds. Dan Hardy announces that this is officially the longest 13-fight card in UFC history — and it feels like it. Tybura lands a nice counter right. Werdum answers with a solid step-in low kick, then muscles Tybura into the fence. Big knee to the guts from Werdum. They break, and Werdum connects again with a flurry. Tybura needs to start showing some urgency. Werdum seizes the Thai clinch and lands a flush knee to the face, then changes levels and takes Tybura to the floor! Two minutes left. This could be a big moment here for the jiu-jitsu savant. Werdum starts working from half guard. He’s looking to transition into mount and Tybura is desperately trying to stop it. Instead, Werdum moves into side control and starts unloading short punches. Tybura scrambles to his feet, eating another knee on the way up! Tybura dives for a double-leg attempt and Werdum locks up his neck! Guillotine is tight! And Tybura is saved by the bell. Round 5: Werdum held onto that guillotine for a few ticks after the horn and Tybura’s team did not like it. Let’s see if Tybura can do anything about it; five minutes to win this fight. Oh, just like that Tybura lands a big head kick! This could be something! And it’s not — Tybura lets Werdum off the hook and doesn’t follow-up. Puzzling decision there from Tybura. Werdum latches onto the Thai clinch and connects with another flush knee to the dome. Tybura has a chin on him. Werdum badly misses a spinning backfist and eats a counter right as a result. Tybura goes back to his low kicks. Werdum blocks a head kick, then starts marching Tybura down. Ouch, low blow there from Werdum. Tybura just shrugs it off. Another massive knee lands for Werdum. I really don’t know how Tybura is eating all of these knees. Werdum is starting to smell blood; he storms forward and flurries, pummeling Tybura with punches. Thirty seconds left and Tybura needs to do something crazy. Tybura lets loose with reckless abandon but it’s too little, too late. This should be Fabricio Werdum’s fight.
