Cub Swanson outclassed Artem Lobov in the UFC Nashville main event.
Conor McGregor’s teammate Artem Lobov got his first shot at a UFC main event on Saturday night. He faced the #4 ranked featherweight in the world in Cub Swanson, and apart from a good first round, it pretty much went the way most expected it.
Swanson had the more diverse and technical striking arsenal, and landed several hard shots that seem to rock and stumble Lobov multiple times. The Russian displayed grit and a very durable chin as he never really went down, but for the most part, he was simply outclassed by a much better fighter.
The official result, Cub Swanson def. Artem Lobov by unanimous decision (49-46 x2, 50-45)
What was the highlight of the fight?
There was a stretch where Swanson was unloading and throwing spinning kicks and other head kicks after landing big punches that stumbled Lobov quite a bit. Lobov didn’t back down, and while it wasn’t very competitive, it was still fun to watch.
Where do these two go from here?
Swanson continues his win streak, and depending on luck and timing, he likely positioned himself for a title shot or at least a number 1 contender’s match next.
Even in defeat, Lobov’s stock rose after this contest. It’s his first main event, and he showed toughness and grit. He also impressed most people by winning the first round against an opponent many thought would run him over. I expect him to get a much lower caliber of an opponent next, but if he wins, maybe a slugfest against Doo Ho Choi could work down the road.
Watch now, later, or never?
It wasn’t particularly competitive, and it did go the distance, but both men threw hands in a pretty entertaining slugfest that’s worth watching. If you have 25 minutes to spare, go watch it now.
