This weekend UFC 229 came to a dramatic and controversial close after Khabib Nurmagomedov defended his UFC lightweight title by tapping Conor McGregor in the fourth round. However, the fight itself has largely been forgotten thanks to what happened immediately afterwards.
Once Herb Dean separated an irate Nurmagomedov from McGregor, the undefeated Dagestani yelled (and maybe spat) in McGregor’s direction. Nurmagomedov then threw his mouth piece in the direction of McGregor’s corner before jumping out of the cage to confront Dillon Danis.
As a brawl ensued outside the cage involving Nurmagomedov and his associates (including his co-manager Rizvan Magomedov) and members of McGregor’s corner, a brawl broke out inside the cage, too. It is unclear what exactly started the in-cage brawl. Some footage suggests that McGregor tried to leave the cage and, when he was held back, struck out at individuals connected to Nurmagomedov.
The fighting inside the Octagon involved McGregor and UFC fighter Zubaira Tukhugov, who was previously booked to face McGregor’s friend Artem Lobov, before an unnamed man in a red t-shirt climbed over the fence and started hitting McGregor in the back of the head.
Twitter user iPratik has uploaded footage showing a previously unseen angle of the fracas. In this footage, Tukhugov and McGregor can be seen brawling as well as the man in the red t-shirt. The footage also reveals Nurmagomedov’s cousin Abubakar Nurmagomedov (who is holding Khabib Nurmagomedov’s traditional papakha hat) engage McGregor. Abubakar is then bundled away by McGregor’s head coach John Kavanagh.
After the brawl is was reported that three men connected to Nuragomedov’s camp had been arrested and then released (supposedly because McGregor declined to press charges against them). The Nevada State Athletic Commission is currently investigating the incident. NSAC originally cited Nurmagomedov as the prime culprit in the incident and withheld his purse. Though NSAC originally released McGregor’s purse, believing he was no more than a victim in the brawl, the commission has since stated they are considering taking action against the Irishman as well.
