USADA releases statement on Lyman Good’s six month suspension

USADA has released more information on Lyman Good’s sanction.

The UFC welterweight tested positive for the banned substance 1-androstenedione last October, USADA announced Monday. As first reported by MMA Fighting on Saturday, Good received a six-month suspension due to the drug being ingested as part of a tainted product, per USADA’s investigative findings.

The ban is retroactive to Oct. 14, when Good was initially provisionally suspended, so he will be eligible to return to the Octagon later this month.

USADA said in a release that a dietary supplement Good was taking did not list any prohibited substances on the label, but after USADA tested said substance it came back positive for 1-androstenedione. The UFC’s anti-doping partner ruled that Good had likely ingested the banned agent from the contaminated supplement.

Good, 32, was facing a two-year suspension, but it was reduced to six months because of the tainted supplement. 1-androstenedione is considered part of the anabolic agents category by the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA).

“Athletes are reminded that even seemingly low-risk dietary supplements may contain prohibited substances, which may not be listed on the Supplement Facts label, thus USADA encourages athletes through Supplement 411 to challenge the reasons for using supplements and make themselves aware of how to reduce their risks of a positive anti-doping test and/or an adverse health event,” USADA said in a release.

Good, a New York native, was pulled from a bout with Belal Muhammad at UFC 205 in November when the results of the failed drug test came back. The former Bellator welterweight champion has won three straight fights and has not lost since 2012.

“We never stopped believing that the truth would finally come out,” Good’s attorney David Fish told MMA Fighting on Saturday. “He’s a special person. This is great news, but will still never reverse the fact he missed UFC 205 and the damage to his reputation.”
