In the first ever Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) women’s Flyweight bout, Strawweight defectors Valerie Letourneau and Joanne Calderwood locked horns last night (Sat., June 18, 2016) at UFC Fight Night 89 live on FOX Sports 1 from the TD Place Arena in Ottawa, Canada.
Fresh off a missed opportunity to fight Paige VanZant back in 2015, Calderwood needed to capture a victory if she wanted to stay afloat in any ongoing title discussions. The former TUF standout showed off some great striking opposite the seasoned Letourneau, landing a vicious spinning back fist in the first round that nearly ended the Canadian’s night.
Letourneau was able to land some offense and bloody Calderwood up along the way, but she simply didn’t pull the trigger like she usually does. Calderwood controlled the action, put even more pressure on Letourneau late into the fight, and secured a tremendous third-round technical knockout on the heels of a piercing body shot.
The full video highlights and finish can be seen above, courtesy of FOX Sports:
This victory is Calderwood’s second in a row and a career-defining moment that should propel her into the top 5.
