There was a pretty gruesome freak injury at LFA 39.
Jerome Rivera did not have a good night at LFA 39. Just 40 seconds into his flyweight bout against Brandon Royval, the 23-year-old suffered a freak elbow injury as he was pushed to the cage.
As he posted his arm on the fence, his elbow bent the opposite direction, and it resulted in a pretty gruesome injury.
As he noticed the break, Rivera tried to walk away and signal that he is injured and cannot continue. Unfortunately for him, Royval didn’t stop fighting and Rivera was dropped by a head kick as he was turning away, before the referee can even step in to stop the contest.

As seen on the video, Royval may have also just missed a knee as he was trying to finish, which would’ve been an illegal strike to a grounded opponent. That being said, it’s also hard to truly blame his actions, as he’s in the heat of the moment and trying to finish a fight. Whether or not he missed the injury and Rivera’s subsequent attempt to verbally tap, it’s really on the referee to stop the contest and protect the fighter.
For what it’s worth, the pair didn’t seem to have any ill feelings towards each other after the fight:

After the contest Royval improved his MMA record to 7-3, while Rivera dropped to 7-2.
