Alexander Volkov made a statement with his win over former champion Fabricio Werdum. Get the details and highlights here.
The main event of UFC London saw a new contender crowned at Heavyweight, as Alexander Volkov knocked out Fabricio Werdum. The finish came in round 4 after Werdum had controlled the majority of the action in the opening 15 minutes. The former Bellator champion moves his record up to 30-6 and remains undefeated in the UFC at 4-0. Werdum falls to 23-8-1 and is now 3-3 since his 2015 Heavyweight title win over Cain Velasquez.
What was the high point of the fight?
The finish. Werdum is a 16-year veteran of the sport who has been in there with so many amazing fighters, and yet he’s only been stopped twice before (against Junior dos Santos and Stipe Miocic). That alone is enough, but the finish was made better by Werdum deciding to give it one last shot. He knew he had to throw, he did, and he paid the price. It was good stuff.
Where do these two go from here?
Volkov clearly moves into contender status, which is good thing for the sometimes stagnant Heavyweight division. But with Miocic set up with Cormier next, and Curtis Blaydes a highly possible next contender, Volkov will clearly need another big win before getting his own shot. Expect to see him in there against someone who gives him that momentum – dos Santos seems like a likely candidate.
Werdum looked pretty slow here – that will happen when you are a 40 year old professional fighter. This almost surely closed the door on his contender days. Luckily for him, there’s an ample veteran’s circuit at Heavyweight, so look for him getting one of those kinds of fights next. Arlovski rematch?
Watch it now, later, or never?
Later I guess. It’s pretty slow and not thrilling as a whole, but it has its moments, plus a good ending.
