War Machine sentenced 36 years to life for 2014 attack on Christy Mack, Corey Thomas

War Machine was sentenced today after having been found guilty on 29 of 34 charges stemming from his brutal assault of Christy Mack and Corey Thomas.

War Machine, formerly known as Jon Koppenhaver, has been handed down a 36-year to life prison sentence for his brutal assault on ex-girlfriend Christy Mack and her then-boyfriend, Corey Thomas. Machine will not be eligible for parole for 36 years, which will make him 71 before he can explore the possibility of an early release.

War Machine broke into Mack’s home in August of 2014, viciously assaulting both Mack and Thomas. Thomas was roughed up first, having been choked, bitten, punched, kicked and threatened before being allowed to leave the premises. After Thomas was gone, Machine turned his attention to his former girlfriend. Her injuries included broken bones, knocked out teeth, a lacerated liver, several cuts, hematomas and serious bruising.

War Machine was found guilty this past March on 29 of the 34 charges brought against him, with the jury taking two days to deliberate. The most serious charge, attempted murder, resulted in a deadlocked jury. A few days before the verdict, Machine pleaded guilty via his defense attorney, Jay Leiderman, to eight lesser domestic battery charges in an attempt to lighten his punishment.

Christy Mack had plastic surgery to repair the broken bones in her face and extensive dental work to address the damage from his attack. She feels the verdict was a victory not just for her, but all survivors of domestic abuse.

“Today was a great victory for myself, as well as victims of domestic violence everywhere,” Mack wrote on Twitter in March after the jury reached its verdict. “Please continue to speak out, and stay strong!”

War Machine says that he has found religion inside the prison system and felt “nothing but joy” over his guilty verdict and even invited Mack to write or visit him one day when her wounds are “fully healed.”
