In the new main event last night (Sat., Feb. 18, 2017) at Bellator 172 live on Spike TV from inside SAP Center in San Jose, California, lightweight veteran Josh Thomson made his return to the cage when he took on Brazilian powerhouse Patricky Freire. Thomson had compiled a 2-0 record since coming over from Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC), while “Pitbull” was coming off a knockout loss to Michael Chandler back at Bellator 157.
After a first round that featured a Freire knockdown of Thomson, “Pitbull” started to take over. Thomson pressed forward with some solid leg kicks before bumping heads with the Brazilian inside and toppling to the ground. After Thomson returned to his feet, Freire blasted him with a huge right-handed uppercut that sent “Punk” to the canvas again and forced him to cover up. Freire added some vicious ground-and-pound before getting peeled off for the second-round knockout.
The memorable finish can be seen below.

With this win, Freire locks down the big name win he needed to jump right back into title contention at 155 pounds. Thomson isn’t the best version of himself at 38 years of age, but he still offers enough in a crowded lightweight division. Freire will need one more win in 2017 before he can take another crack at Chandler.
