Derrick Lewis picked up his latest violent victory by annihilating Travis Browne in round two of their headlining bout at last night’s (Sun., Feb. 19, 2017) UFC Fight Night 105 event in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada (see it again here).
The win marked his sixth straight (five knockouts) and showed once again why he is among the heaviest hitters in all of mixed martial arts (MMA), putting “Hapa” to sleep with some devastating and unforgiving ground-and-pound. What was more impressive, however, was his ability to dig deep and recover from gut-busting blows to the midsection that buckled him in round one.
While he was quick to blame it on needing to take a dump, it was obvious the kicks to the gut took a toll on him. And since “Hapa” couldn’t capitalize, Lewis — the self-proclaimed interim heavyweight champion — took advantage and finally landed his haymakers once he was able to close distance.
What I’d like see next for “Black Beast” is a hard-hitting showdown against Francis Ngannou. While some may not like the matchup for the simple fact that it will eliminate a streaking contender and fan favorite, it’s the fight business, and the two are bound to collide sooner or later.
And it sure beats a match up against Ronda Rousey.
Francis — who has won nine in a row — has his sights set on Cain Velasquez, but that bout simply isn’t in the cards just yet. The winner of this potential bangfest will elevate him to, at the very least, a No. 1 contender bout.
Will the fight last long? Probably not? Will it be fun to watch? Absolutely.
