WSOF champion Marlon Moraes would love to fight top free agent Aljamain Sterling

Aljamain Sterling is one of the top free agents in the bantamweight division, and World Series of Fighting 135-pound champion Marlon Moraes hopes he ends up signing with the promotion next.

Moraes, who looks to extend his WSOF record to 9-0 against Joseph Barajas on Feb. 20, spoke with MMAFighting.com about the possibility of fighting Sterling, who is a free agent after going 4-0 with three finishes in the UFC, inside the WSOF cage in the future.

“That would be cool, man,” Moraes said. “There’s Sterling, and also Bibiano Fernandes — I don’t know how his contract with ONE FC is right now. They are phenomenal athletes, I’m a big fan, and they are at the top.

“I want to fight the best. It would be cool to welcome them to WSOF one day. They have big names, and it would be good not only for my growth as an athlete, but also for the promotion.”

Sterling impressed inside the Octagon with wins over Cody Gibson, Hugo Viana, Takeya Mizugaki and Johnny Eduardo in less than two years. Moraes, who won eight straight in less than three years at WSOF, sees “Funk Master” as one of the five best bantamweights on the UFC roster.

“He’s a complete athlete with a great wrestling game,” said the Brazilian. “It’s a good fight, anyone would like to watch it. It would be another great test, and I would be able to show where I belong.”

Born in Rio de Janeiro and based in New Jersey, Moraes says fighting the New York-native in New Jersey would make it even cooler.

“That would be awesome,” Moraes said. “He’s training at Weidman’s team in New York, and we’re here, so it would be cool to bring this fight around New York. It would be a great ….View full article
